Matthew 11-15 12:36 - We will have give an account someday for every careless word...that is scary to consider, wouldn't you say? 13:3-9, 18-23 - The parable of the sower. Which type of soil are you? 14:13-14 - What struck me about this story was that in spite of the fact that Jesus was sad about the loss of John the Baptist and in spite of the fact that He was tired and worn out, He still had compassion on the people. I find that when I am tired and sad, I do not think of others. I am only concerned about myself. What an example Jesus sets in this passage. 14:29-30 - Peter, walking on the water. To me, the time for Peter to doubt was BEFORE he stepped onto the lake, not once he was there. It seems like once he was on the water and the water held him, he would have had no thought to distrust Jesus. Those thoughts of doubt should have happened while he was on solid ground, still in the boat. Don't ya think? 15:8-9 - "The people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me..." This is scary. Makes you wonder about people. Makes you check yourself. Makes you wonder... 15:30-31 - These stories of Jesus healings and all of the conversions because of it reminds me of my time here in India. So many people come to know Christ because of miracles here. Why isn't it like that in the US? Not enough faith? I don't know. 15:33 - the disciples asked Jesus where they could get enough bread to feed all of the people. Crazy! This was AFTER the feeding of the 5000! You'd think they would have remembered that. I mean, how do you forget that and question Him again? The lack of faith of the disciples flat out frightens me. If they, who lived and walked and talked with Jesus, doubted Him, how much more will we doubt?
Haven't read yet but I'm popping in early to comment on Raymond's post.
Stepping out of the boat:
I think St. Pete had it right. We're all too often gung ho when we're on solid ground (or solid boat anyway). It's when you're really doing it, that the "Oh crap" moment takes over.
Kinda like you guys and India... when you were here and planning to go I'm sure you were full of faith and gusto but it's another story when that plane touches down, then Mr. & Mrs. Don leave you and fly home and you're there ALONE! That's when I'd be thinking "Is He big enough for this? Can He really be there for me? Did I really hear Him right on this one?"
Not to put words in your mouth... but that what I'd be thinking! :o) Good thing He is faithful to come along side of us, grab us by the hand and renew our faith so that we can walk on water once again!
You are right Chris, good point. It is much easier to be gung ho and brave when you are safe, still "in the boat." Once you get out...yup, you're right. Very good. Thanks for the reminder. And yeah, that is how it is for us in a way. It was much easier to be excited about it before we "got out of the boat." Of course, now that God has proven Himself faithful over and over, we should have more consistent faith...
@raymond: 12:36 Very Sower: Is it possible to be every kind? I can relate to it all. Sometimes I just don't understand. Sometimes it just doesn't last. Sometimes I'm just way too preoccupied with worldly things. Sometimes I wonder if God's Word ever really takes root in me and grows to fruition. Peter on water: Now this really baffles me. If it is you command me to come to you on the water. What if it wasn’t him? Couldn’t whatever scary thing it was so command and make Peter take a plunge? Or maybe the word translated “if” could also be translated “since” or something else that might make more sense. Or maybe I’m just not getting it. 15:30 I wonder if it has anything to do with how saturated the US is with Intellectualism. 15:33 I kinda gave the disciples the benefit of the doubt and thought they were asking sort of tongue in cheek, anticipating what Jesus was going to do, but not wanting to be presumptuous.
Now that I've read the rest of the comments I have more to say about Peter. The key statement for me is "but when he saw the wind." As long as he was focused on Jesus he was walking on the water. When he started focusing on his surroundings, he started losing faith.
