On the other hand (followup from my Luke 9:45 comment) here is a verse that would probably be clear and straightforward with a little digging into how they lived back then. Well, it is pretty clear even without the digging. We get the jist of it anyway. But the idea of burning grass in an oven is a bit foreign to me. Just yesterday while I was looking for something I saw somewhere the claim that if you really want to understand the Bible you need to understand life as it was in the Middle East.

In the NET Notes in Accordance, my Bible software, it says:

Grk “into the oven.” The expanded translation “into the fire to heat the oven” has been used to avoid misunderstanding; most items put into modern ovens are put there to be baked, not burned.

The oven was most likely a rounded clay oven used for baking bread, which was heated by burning wood and dried grass.

Another thought. It may be good and worthwhile to understand more clearly what in the world Jesus meant by the screwy-to-western-thinking things He said, but only if I don’t get lost in the details and lose sight of the point of His message.; January 12, 2008 at 10:30 AM
