Matt. 10:15
“It will be more bearable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.”

What town? The town that refused to welcome the disciples when they went to tell the good news of the Kingdom.

I’m reading a Good News for Modern Man NT because it has pictures of NT places and things in it. But in Matthew 10:15 it doesn’t say it will be more bearable, but rather that God will show greater mercy to the people of Sodom and Gomorrah. Is it the same thing? I trust the ESV translation more than I do the Good News version. Maybe if I want the benefit of the pictures I should read the text of the ESV and browse through the pictures in the Good News version.

Anyway, does the verse hit me in ESV like it did in the Good News? Not really, although it has been too long since I read it to remember all that I wanted to say about it. Argh. I need to journal as I go, instead of waiting.

According the the NET Notes: sn The allusion to Sodom and Gomorrah, the most wicked of OT cities from Gen 19:1–29, shows that to reject the current message is even more serious than the worst sins of the old era and will result in more severe punishment.

According to the NIV Commentary: Sodom and Gomorrah faced catastrophic destruction because of their sin (Ge 19) and became bywords of loathsome corruption (Isa 1:9; Mt 11:22-24; 2Pe 2:6; Jude 7). Although there is still worse to come for them on the Day of Judgment, there is even more awful judgment for those who reject the word and the messengers of the Messiah (cf. Heb 2:1-3).

How does it get worse than Hell? And separation from God? What could be worse?

Yeah, but according to what Jesus said, there will evidently be differing degrees of torment. And the cities that prompted judgment here and now on earth are not facing the worst fate on judgment day.

So what have the Sodomites that were destroyed back then been doing for the last several thousand years? And how about the cities that rejected the disciples?
